Biodiversity Richness in Sebangau

Sebangau ecosystem serves as freshwater reservoir for its surrounding areas. It contains high biodiversity, as well as economic non-timber forest production (NTFP) for about ±62.000 local communities. Based on CIMTROPs data, there are 150 species of birds , 34 species of fish and 35 species of mammals, and 808 species flora (WWF & LIPI 2007).
Based on research (Husson & Bernard (2004); (WWF, Ancrenaz , BKSDA/BTNS (2007)), 6000-9000 orangutans individual in the park has been found. The population of orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) in Sebangau National Park is under threat, mainly due to habitat loss, habitat fragmentation and direct hunting. The massive illegal logging in the park in the past has decreased their habitats significantly. WWF-Indonesia of Central Kalimantan and Sebangau National Park supports orangutan conservation for both orangutan and human welfare (ecotourism).
