About Freshwater
In the long stream flow areas of Kreung Peusangan and Krueng Sabee-Aceh; Kapuas Hulu-West Kalimantan; and Noelmina-West Timor, WWF Indonesia has been engaged with the river’s management authorities to develop an integrated sustainable watershed management.
With implementing Payment for Environmental Services (PES) scheme in Lombok, watershed ecosystem in Rinjani forest has been restored. Recently a join research of the Irrawaddy River’s Dolphin, an endangered freshwater species in Sesayap river has been conducted by WWF Indonesia, WWF Germany, Ministry of Forestry and a NGO-RASl. Those experiences showed that freshwater approach has been used to bring all stakeholders to conserve forest areas sorrounding the freshwater habitats or riparian landscapes.
From WWF Indonesia’s Board Workshop in 2008, a full mandate has been given to Senior Management Team to formalize the Freshwater Program in WWF Indonesia’s Conservation Program. For the first step, a new division/task force will be established under Forest, Freshwater and Terresterial Species Program of WWF Indonesia.
WWF Indonesia itself has fully participated in contributing to some local PES regulations in Indonesia. In Lombok, WWF Indonesia had succeeded to support the West Lombok district in developing District Regulation on Environmental Services approved in 2007 by West Lombok Parlaiment. In Aceh Province, WWF Indonesia has been initiated to develop Aceh Provincial Regulation on PES. The final draft of the Aceh Provincial Regulation on PES has submited to the Governor of Aceh Province.
In May 2005, WWF Indonesia with ICRAF-RUPES, LP3ES, Ministry of Forestry and Bappenas joined their collaboration to develop an environmental service network in Indonesia, we called COMMITTES, community interest of environmental services. At least 50 environmental services practitioners joined this network.
