Bali Barat

Bali

A large part of West Bali was established as a National Park in 1984 covering some 19,000 ha. The area encloses the island of Menjangan, a destination for dive tourists.

WWF has worked in West Bali National Park to establish a multi-stakeholder management mechanism and a private sector initiative Friends of the Reef was established to promote environmentally sound tourism business practices. West Bali National park has become an important site for the Climate change program of WWF-Indonesia where the impacts of coral bleaching are monitored and used for campaigning purposes to mitigate CO 2 emissions in developed countries. Furthermore, the climate change program works at this MPA to test adaptive strategies against climate change impacts, including reducing other stress levels on reef ecosystems through establishment of collaborative effective MPA management. The marine program provides some support for participatory surveillance against destructive fishing and for establishing strict protection of grouper and other fish spawning aggregation sites for replenishment purposes.
