Jamursba Medi is located along the north coast of the Birds head peninsula in Papua and includes 3 beaches with total length of some 21 km. The area is important as Leatherback turtle nesting beach and around the peak nesting season in June-July. Since 1994 an area of 10,000 ha was declared a wildlife reserve.
Current work by WWF continues to include integration of conservation with sustainable economic livelihood development, enhancing capacity of local institutions through support for data and information collection and -management, conducting scientific research on global migration patterns a.o., involving the site in eco-regional action planning processes, and conducting education and awareness activities for local communities.
An important management target however includes establishing a larger management unit that just the beach to address threats occurring outside the nesting beaches. The team is collating information and lobbying with different groups for a turtle based MPA.
