Lorentz National Park

Papua

Lorentz National Park - one of the World's Heritage site with 2.4 million hectares, making it the largest protected area in Indonesia, represents a wide variety of habitats, from mangrove to alpine forests. Well known for the Baliem Valley, Lorentz surprisingly has no management plan and management body in place. The park is threatened by logging and mining operations located on the borders. WWF is involved in the development process of the management plan based on collaborative management principles. WWF-Indonesia builds local capacity (communities, government, and local NGOs) for future participation in the management of Lorentz. District government support in ensuring the intactness of Lorentz is seen as an absolute necessity that WWF-Indonesia aims to achieve through the revision of district spatial plans.
