WWF Indonesia started conservation activities in 1962 with Ujung Kulon National Park as the focus for Javan rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) conservation. All efforts have been directed towards conserving this critically endangered species by protecting their habitat, as well as monitoring their population. In addition to terrestrial habitat conservation, in 1998 WWF Indonesia started to add a marine component as parts of the integrated conservation efforts in Ujung Kulon.

Marine activities included coral reef monitoring to obtain data on status of coral reef in Ujung Kulon every year since 1998. The data shows that despite the low coral cover, and the existence of threats from human activities, coral reef in Ujung Kulon showed indication of growth and recovery. WWF and Park authority then received supports to ensure the recovery of the coral reef ecosystem. These supports included grant for conducting regular marine patrol as well as supports for empowering local people, so they can be involved in the protection of the reef ecosystem.
