Ujung Kulon NP
Ujung Kulon National Park
Ujung Kulon National Park (UKNP) is located in the western tip of Java Island and is considered a prime habitat for the Javan rhino. Acknowledging its environmental significance and ecological importance, Ujung Kulon National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. WWF has been working closely with the Ministry of Forestry, the national park authority, NGOs, local government and communities to support the habitat management at the UKNP. Our efforts in the park are focused towards preserving the Javan rhino and its habitat from destruction and fragmentation, supporting anti poaching activities, stopping forest encroachment and illegal resource extraction from the park.
Main Threats to the Javan rhino
In UKNP, the main threats to this rare mammal are destruction of its habitat and competition for space with grazing wild cattle (Bos javanicus). In addition, some invasive plants like (Arenga spp) limit the growth and expansion of the rhino's favorite food plants by blocking the sunlight from reaching the forest floor. Although poaching poses a potential threat to the rhinos, no poaching incidents have been reported since the 1990s due to effective law enforcement by the park authority coupled with initiatives like Rhino Monitoring and Protection Unit (RMPU) and Coastal Patrol. Other threats to the rhinos include natural disasters like Tsunamis and spread of contagious diseases that could lead to mass mortality.
