Sahabat Harimau
The Sumatran tiger is the last remaining Indonesian tiger – after the Bali tiger was declared extinct in the 1940s and the Javan tiger in the 1980s. WWF-Indonesia recognises there are considerable obstacles for the future of 'the king of the forest' in its natural habitat, which encourages the continuation of concerted efforts to protect the Sumatran tiger.
Why (Sumatran tiger)?
Sumatran tigers, as top predators in the food chain, have an important role in stabilizing the natural ecosystem. These species require a special habitat for living: there must be extensive forest cover for shelter, access to adequate water for drinking, bathing and swimming as well as availability of prey (food). As the key balance within forest ecosystems, the role of the tiger is to maintain natural sustainability and ensure the survival of other wildlife, which will in turn ensure the survival of humans.
Do you know?
• Unlike domestic cats, Sumatran tigers love water and are great swimmers. They have membranes between their fingers to swim
• Their orange and black stripes have the power to camouflage in the forest
• There are no two tigers with the same pattern of stripes, similar to human fingerprints
SAHABAT harimau
Community and public participation is an essential part of the efforts to conserve the Sumatran tiger. Therefore, WWF-Indonesia launched a program named "SAHABAT harimau" in response to the challenge of improving public awareness about the importance of the continuing the survival of Sumatran tigers in the future.
Help us to save the Sumatran tiger.
You can help our video trap and research teams on the field to monitor and observe the behavior of populations and to prevent human interference, which could threaten the Sumatran tiger. Show your support by joining the SAHABAT harimau program.
