KUPAS TUNTAS Surabaya
On Sunday, February 25, Earth Hour Community Surabaya, Marine Buddies and other youths of the city held "KUPAS TUNTAS" to commemorate National Waste Care Day. "KUPAS TUNTAS" was our way to say “Kumpulkan Plastik, Tulis, dan Timbang di Bank Sampah” (collect plastic waste, log and weigh them at the garbage bank). The act which was performed along Darmo Street Surabaya during the Car Free Day (CFD) was not only about collecting garbage since we also educated the CFD goers to the dangers of plastic waste.
The event brought together around 130 Surabaya youngsters from various communities and institutions, namely Earth Hour Surabaya, Marine Buddies Surabaya, Nutrifood, IMTLI (Ikatan Mahasiswa Teknik Lingkungan Indonesia), IMTL UINSA, KPPL ITS, HMITL UNAIR, and HMITL UPN. We speared in four large groups to pick up plastic waste along the area and to inform the public about the dangers of waste to the surrounding environment. For example, we explained how difficult it was for plastic waste to decompose. Moreover, when a plastic object was carried up to the ocean it would break down into microscopic beads those were also very dangerous for our sea marine biota.
Altogether we gathered 4 Kg of plastic waste that we divided into two types: bottles and wraps. We sorted them and sent the useable ones to the garbage bank to be re-processed. It was saddening to see the amount of garbage collected since it showed how terrible people like to litter on Car Free Day.
It might be hard for us not to use plastic, but we can start supporting the cause by stop buying bottled mineral water while traveling, bringing tote bag when we go shopping and using food container.
Considering that Indonesia is the world's largest plastic waste polluter after China, we as the nation's next generation must be able to carry on the great effort of our patriots in making this nation better by safeguarding our nature.
